The Truth About the Financial Industry
It probably doesn’t come as a shock to you that the financial industry is in business to make money for its shareholders and stakeholders. Just like any business, the goal of people in the industry is to maximize profts and do the best job they can at increasing proftability. There’s nothing wrong with this, provided that you understand that they’re playing a completely diferent game, with different rules, than most Canadians realize.
To that end, they have developed the entire industry in a way that increases their profts as their primary objective—and taking care of the individual investors is absolutely a secondary consideration.
It’s important to remember that the fnancial services sector is a massive industry, creating approximately 6% of Canada’s entire GDP (gross domestic product). Employing about 750,000 Canadians, the industry is a signifcant component of our economy, and very sophisticated. Its sheer size also gives it major infuence when it comes to lobbying the government for laws and policies that beneft the companies involved in fnancial
services.
While the industry’s growth has been incredibly successful and proftable, this success has been
detrimental to the average Canadian investor looking to grow his money with certainty.
